Karate (空手) (Kara ‘empty’, te ‘hand’) is a martial art counted among Japanese budō. Karate originally comes from the island of Okinawa south of Japan. Kung fu, brought to the island by Chinese people, is among karate’s roots, possibly combined with other already existing indigenous fighting arts. In the beginning, karate was also written with a different kanji for “kara”.
The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international organization for sport karate in the world, with over 10 million members in 191 countries. Competitions are held in both kumite and kata across all age groups. The WKF’s Karate World Championship is held every two years, a tradition that has continued since the first championship in Tokyo in 1970.
